Latvian Volunteers  of the Wehrmacht   1941-1945

WHY DID HE PUT ON THIS UNIFORM?

It is self-explanatory that serving Hitler was not a reasonable way out. However, the question remains unanswered: why did many Baltic people join Wehrmacht, contrary to their old prejudice against the Germans in general and their disapproval of Nazism?

On June 14, 1940, in order to speed up the process of Latvian surrender to the USSR in accordance with Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, the Soviet army attacked a frontier Latvian village of Maslenki just on Soviet-Latvian border. Six Latvian citizens, among them a kid and a woman, were killed while 43 other local residents and border-guards were kdnapped by the Soviets.

After that incident, Latvian government of Ulmanis surrendered to all Soviet claims and by June 17, the Red Army troops occupied the country.

After the Soviets put all Latvian territory under their military control, the Soviets orchestrated a coup as a result of which legitimate Latvian government was replaced with a pro-Soviet puppet administration. The hand-picked “government” requested to join the USSR, and on August 5 / 1940, Latvia’s existence as a nation ceased, and the country was incorporated into the Soviet Union.

From its very first day, the Soviet presence in Latvia was marked by the arrests, mass deportations and executions of innocent people. Most of them never had a slight chance to be harmful to the USSR. That did not spare their lives, and many of them were tortured and killed with extreme cruelty.

Many Latvians who managed to escape from the Soviet terror to the forests, started guerilla warfare against the Soviet invaders. They called themselves “The Forest Brothers”. However they were heavily outnumbered by the Red Army and NKVD troops.

This woman was shot by the NKVD troopers fleeing Riga less than an hour before the Germans took over the city.

No wonder that many Latvians welcomed the new invaders who finished with the Soviet horrors.

Only days after the German invasion of the USSR, hundreds of Latvian volunteers  joined newly-created indigenous police forces. Most of those people lost their relatives during the period of Soviet atrocities and were willing to avenge their country’s crucifixion.

In winter 1941, the Germans started re-organizing some of these police units and sending them to the Eastern front. After months of heavy combat, the so-called “Latvian legions” were incorporated into deutsche Wehrmacht, and in 1943 most of them were transferred to  the Waffen-SS.

Later, the Germans organized several new Latvian battalions within Wehrmacht, plus two “Eastern Engineer Batallions” and seven Construction Batallions.

In January-February 1944, the Germans mobilized all the Latvians from 1904 to 1923 draft categories organizing them into six “Grenzschutz-Regimenter” (Frontier Rangers) with total manpower of 18 000.

In March 1944, the Germans also organized a separate Latvian air force unit under the name of “Nachtschlachtgruppe 12” (Night Combat Group 12) later transformed into “Latvian Aviation Legion” equipped with a few obsolete airplanes.

Latvian soldiers were used by the Nazis mainly as cannon-fodder and cast into the most dangerous areas of combat.

At the very end of war, Latvian volunteers met their bitter end. Most of them were trapped in Courland where they conducted semi-guerilla war for a while clashing both with the Soviet and German troopers and tried to cross the Baltic sea to Sweden (they were not aware of the fact that Sweden would send them back to the Soviets). Othrs retreated westwards to surrender to the British and Americans who also tended to turn them back to the USSR. Paradoxically, in 1945 the Soviets used to treat these “turncoats” in a milder manner than they treated innocent people in Latvia in 1940. most of them were not executed on the spot but sent to GULAG which some of them managed to survive.

The sad story of Latvian legionnaires illustrates how many people were trapped between the two aggressors having left very little choice of their own. Those very few Latvians who were given real chance to choose the side in the war, chose to fight for the Western Allies like the brave seamen of the “Free Latvian Fleet” who fought for the USA under Latvian flag.

After the Baltic states re-gained their independence in 1991, few surviving Latvian volunteers of the Wehrmacht organized a series of public gatherings and manifestations in Latvia.

That actions outraged Russian officials and many Russian-speakers in Latvia as well as shocked West-European liberals and socialists. In 2006 the government of Latvia was forced to forbid such gatherings in Riga.

The volunteers in their turn, emphasize that their collaboration with the Nazis during the war was the only way to fight against the Soviets.

.

The history of Estonian collaborators with the Nazis was very similar to that of their Latvian colleagues.
