This area includes Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, three democratic nations, new EU and NATO members, formerly occupied and annexed by the USSR.

All the three nations have significant Russian-speaking diasporas, the fact causing constant tensions with the government of Russian Federation.

Latvia and Estonia still have unresolved territorial disputes with Russia going back to the end of World War II. Lithuania had territorial dispute with Poland nowadays completely resolved
