A breakaway region of Georgia, Abkhazia has been taken over by Russian troops and mercenaries during the war of 1992-93.

The occupation forces established there “a pirate republic” run by the Apsua extremists (Apsua is a small ethnic group that formed less than 20% of the pre-war population of Abkhazia) and performed severe ethnic cleansing wiping out or deporting some 75% of the Abkhazians.

As of today, Abkhazia’s “independence” is not recognized by any of the world nations. The area is considered the paradise for all sorts of illicit activities. Meanwhile Russian Parliament is looking for legal ways to incorporate this Georgian region into Russian Federation while Russian media produce numerous materials that present the ethnic cleansing of 1992-93 as an example of “national self-determination” and twist the history of Georgia and Abkhazia. Unfortunately this distorted picture of Abkhazia is sometimes reflected in Western media as well.
